Staying in Recovery During the Holidays: Tips for Protecting Your Progress

Posted by Claire Holtz in Advice 12. 22. 2025

The holidays can be a time of joy, connection, and celebration. But they can also be a time of added stress, triggers, and challenges. From social gatherings centered around alcohol to family dynamics and financial pressure, the holidays may feel like a hazard to your recovery progress.

If that’s how you’re feeling, you’re not alone. And if you need some extra advice and encouragement, our team is here for you! Staying sober and protecting your health during the holiday season is a gift to yourself, and it’s one you should be proud of.

Holiday Recovery Advice

Make a Plan (and Stick to It)

Planning ahead is one of the most powerful recovery tools because it eliminates chance, confusion, and blurred boundaries.

Before attending a holiday event, ask yourself:

  • How long do I want to stay?
  • What are my exit options if I feel uncomfortable?
  • Who can I call or text if I need support?

Having a plan gives you control and reduces anxiety in triggering situations. If you need to adjust the plan while you’re out, you can!

Protect Your Boundaries

You’re not obligated to attend every event or explain your recovery journey to anyone. It’s okay to say no, choose other plans that align better with your recovery goals, or just tell people you’re focused on your health this year and that you appreciate their understanding. While it can feel selfish, it’s important to remember that boundaries are meant to protect you (and your relationships to others!).

Maintain Your Usual Routine

The holidays can disrupt sleep schedules, meals, therapy appointments, and support meetings. Doing your best to stick to your normal routine can make things feel less chaotic. Make sure you’re eating regularly and getting adequate sleep. It can be harder to make positive decisions when you’re tired and hungry!

Make sure you stick with therapy appointments, meetings, and medical check-ins. Support groups and recovery meetings typically offer holiday celebrations or sessions and they’re a great option for extra support. Even small routines will provide extra stability during a chaotic season.

Be Aware of Potential Triggers

The holidays can bring up grief, family conflict, or feelings of isolation — especially if your life looks different now than it once did.

Instead of pushing those feelings away:

  • Acknowledge them
  • Talk about them with someone you trust
  • Practice self-compassion

Recovery isn’t about never feeling uncomfortable; it’s about knowing how to respond when you do.

Lean on Your Support System

Connection is a huge part of recovery. Stay connected with your sponsor, peer group, therapist, provider, and/or trusted friends and family members. If in-person support would be beneficial, you can search online for meetings near you. If you’re looking for extra support you can get at home, apps like Holon Vibe are a great choice.
