Online Support Options for Addiction Recovery

Addiction recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is online support for addiction recovery. Here's five options for your consideration if you're seeking support.

If you’re in recovery, getting support doesn’t always have to mean traveling to an appointment or attending an in-person meeting. Today, there are several online options that make recovery support easier to get than ever.

While online options are great, they may not be for everyone. Some people in recovery may need a higher level of care, like in-person treatment or intensive outpatient services. If that’s you and you’re looking for help finding a treatment option that works, you can use findtreatment.gov to locate a center near you.

Addiction recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is online support for addiction recovery. Whether you’re looking for direct care from a healthcare provider, peer support, or help managing stress and cravings, there are options available right from your phone or computer.

Here are five options for online support for your recovery:

1. Holon Health

Holon Health offers judgment-free primary care and recovery support for people living with substance use disorder (SUD), those in recovery, and people with mental health concerns like anxiety and depression.

Holon Health’s services are fully covered by Medicaid, Medicare, TRICARE, and most marketplace plans. We also accept commercial insurance, but there may be a copay (which we’ll tell you about before we enroll you).

Holon’s services include telehealth appointments, primary care, prescriptions, peer support from someone who’s been there, help with housing, and short lessons you can earn cash rewards for on the Holon Vibe app.

By participating in daily lessons and staying engaged in your recovery journey, you can earn rewards. You can get these rewards by:

  • Completing daily lessons on health and wellness topics
  • Attending appointments
  • Making positive and prosocial changes
  • Reaching your goals

Sign up today and get access to the Holon Vibe app. Once you sign up, you’ll have to complete a short call with an intake specialist and then you’ll be on your way to earning rewards.

2. Online Group Therapy

Online group therapy connects people virtually, so you can attend sessions from anywhere with an internet connection. Not only is it convenient, but it also gives you the chance to meet others facing similar struggles, reminding you that you’re not alone.

Unlike online recovery meetings or peer support groups, online group therapy is a form of professional treatment led by a licensed therapist or trained professional.

There are several platforms that offer online group therapy for addiction and substance use, including:

  • Grouport: Grouport’s virtual therapist-led sessions are designed to help you understand your patterns, build healthier coping skills, and maintain lasting recovery.
  • Brave Health: The online group therapy sessions at Brave Health provide a supportive, therapist-led space where people can connect, share experiences, and build coping skills.

3. Journaling and Meditation

Journaling and meditation are great tools for building healthy recovery and coping skills, especially if you prefer to move at your own pace.

Journaling gives you a space to process emotions, track triggers, and celebrate the small wins (which is a must!). Meditation is another helpful tool that can help you manage stress, cravings, and difficult emotions.

And you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. There are plenty of free online resources to help you get started, from guided meditation videos on YouTube to journaling prompts and exercises. Here are a few:

4. Virtual Outpatient Programs

Virtual outpatient programs are another online support option for addiction recovery. These programs offer a more structured approach to treatment without requiring you to stay at a treatment facility.

Virtual outpatient programs typically combine group and individual counseling with recovery services, like medical care and relapse-prevention skills training.

There are lots of virtual outpatient programs to choose from. Some examples include:

  • Groups Recover Together: Aiming to provide holistic addiction treatment, the program at Groups Recover Together utilizes a mix of medication, group counseling, and ongoing care.
  • Behavioral Health Group: Participants in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Behavioral Health Group receive 9+ hours of treatment per week, including group and individual counseling. The IOP lasts at least 12 weeks and is offered in both in-person and telehealth formats (based on availability).

5. Online Community Support Groups

Talking to others who are dealing with similar issues can help a lot, and that’s why online community support groups can be a great option for addiction recovery. Since others in the group have “been there,” they can be a wonderful support system.

There are national and local addiction support groups you can join, many of which have online meetings. These groups include:

And remember, if AA isn’t for you, that’s okay! Each program offers a different approach to addiction recovery, so you can explore your options and find a group that feels right for you.

How to Choose the Right Online Recovery Support

With so many options available, finding the right online support for addiction recovery can feel overwhelming. Start by thinking about what kind of help would be most useful to you right now.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • How much support do you need? Think about whether you’re looking for occasional support or a more structured program.
  • Do you need medication support? If so, choose a program that provides access to healthcare providers, like Holon Health.
  • What does it cost? Some resources are free, while others come at a cost.
  • Is it covered by insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare? Check whether the provider accepts insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare.

Whether you’re looking for professional treatment, peer connection, or self-guided resources, online support for addiction recovery makes it easier to find help that fits into your life.

With Holon Health, you don’t have to navigate recovery alone. Our team is ready to assist with whatever you need – from healthcare to help with housing and everything in between.
